Photography can provide a window into the mind of an athlete to see the game from their point of view. More than any other tournament, Roland Garros gives me the vantage points and inspiration to experiment with new ways of seeing. From hundreds of shots of Rafael Nadal, I selected these multiple exposure images to shine fresh light on his incredible preparation, balance, symmetry and understanding of geometry and angles in order to hit shots through narrow corridors of lines only he can see.

Everything was done inside Canon cameras. I never use photoshop.

While Rafa’s forehand is perhaps the most dominant shot in tennis, and his physicality on clay personifies Roland Garros, he ultimately wins titles because of his positivity and superior mentality, what he calls “right determination”. Few would imagine he could win 11 titles. But he dreamed it, and he did it. Roland Garros 2018 will also be remembered as the year that Simona Halep finally broke through and won her first grand slam. To capture her beautiful form and tenacity under pressure, I spent most of the final below the court in “Le Fosse”, perhaps the best vantage point in all of tennis. 

Behind the scenes at Roland Garros, I am often struck by the artistry integral to French culture. From the Roland Garros flag and logo to the hats of the fans, Roland Garros seems to value artistry and fashion more than any other tournament. To explore the heart of this culture, I went on the roof and used multiple exposure techniques to put players in the flag and logo because they are the center piece of the tournament and its beloved designs and imagery. The French clay itself is more beautiful than any other surface in tennis. Rallies last longer, and players such as Nadal stand deeper, almost in the lap of the fans. Inspired by cubism and other forms of art exhibited in Paris galleries, I painted lines through photos to add dimensions, connect the players with the fans and emphasize the lines of sight from different perspectives in the stadium. For fans, the experience is beautiful, intimate and dynamic.

La photographie peut fournir une fenêtre sur l’esprit d’un athlète pour voir le jeu de son point de vue. Plus que tout autre tournoi, Roland Garros me donne les points de vue et l’inspiration pour expérimenter de nouvelles façons de voir.

Parmi des centaines de photos de Rafael Nadal, j’ai sélectionné ces images à multiples expositions pour éclairer d’une manière nouvelle sa préparation incroyable, son équilibre, sa symétrie et sa compréhension de la géométrie et des angles afin de frapper la balle dans des corridors étroits que lui seul voit. Alors que le coup droit de Rafa est peut-être le tir le plus dominant du tennis et que son physique sur terre battue personnifie Roland-Garros, il remporte finalement des titres en raison de sa positivité et de sa mentalité supérieure. Il appelle cela “la bonne détermination”. Peu imaginaient qu’il pourrait remporter 11 titres. Mais il l’a rêvé, et il l’a fait.

On se souviendra également de Roland Garros 2018 comme l’année où Simona Halep a finalement traversé et remporté son premier Grand Slam. Pour capturer sa belle forme et sa ténacité sous la pression, j’ai passé la majeure partie de la finale sous le terrain de jeu dans «Le Fosse», peut-être le meilleur point de vue de tout le tennis.

À Roland-Garros, je suis souvent frappé par le talent artistique inhérent à la culture française. Du drapeau et du logo Roland Garros aux chapeaux des fans, Roland Garros semble accorder plus d’importance à l’art et à la mode que tout autre tournoi.

Pour explorer le cœur de cette culture, je suis allé sur le toit et ai utilisé plusieurs techniques d’exposition pour placer les joueurs dans le drapeau et le logo car ils sont la pièce maîtresse du tournoi et de ses dessins et images bien-aimés. L’argile française elle-même est plus belle que toute autre surface de tennis. Les rallyes durent plus longtemps et des joueurs tels que Nadal sont plus profonds, presque dans les genoux des supporters.

Inspiré par le cubisme et d’autres formes d’art exposées dans les galeries parisiennes, j’ai dessiné des lignes à travers des photos pour ajouter des dimensions, connecter les joueurs aux fans et souligner les lignes de vue sous différents angles dans le stade. Pour les fans, l’expérience est belle, intime et dynamique.

Pocos imaginarían que podría ganar 11 títulos. Pero lo soñó, y lo hizo.

Roland Garros 2018 también será recordado como el año en que Simona Halep finalmente se rompió y ganó su primer gran slam. Para capturar su hermosa forma y tenacidad bajo presión, pasé la mayor parte de la final debajo de la cancha en “Le Fosse”, quizás el mejor punto de vista en todo el tenis.
