Hiraushi Yoshitaka, 81, and his wife Kazuko, 83, have been sleeping on the floor of a cold school gymnasium in subzero temperatures since the March 11 tsunami destroyed all homes of the 25,000 residents of Rikuzen-Takata.
Municipal officials, themselves homeless, say that 1160 survivors applied to move into the 36 pre-fab temporary dorms erected outside a junior high school sheltering evacuees above Rikuzen-Takata in Japan.
