Statistics such as goals, shots on goal and time of possession don’t tell the full story of a World Cup match.
Here’s a guide of what to watch for:
Who is winning the battles for possession, especially in midfield.

How are the star players controlling possession and positioning.

Who is winning the aerial battles, especially during set pieces such as free kicks or corner kicks.

How well are defenders covering attackers, handling pressure and clearing the ball out of danger.

Which team is more physical and durable.

How well are teams communicating.

How well are the keeper, and their defenders, cutting off shooting angles.

How athletic and explosive is the keeper.

How quick on the ball, decisive and precise are the strikers, especially during penalty kicks, and how good are the keepers.
