Why SGA (Repeat MVP) is the greatest NBA player ever from Canada

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the pride of Hamilton, Ontario and the Oklahoma City Thunder, became the second Canadian after Steve Nash to be named NBA MVP after leading the NBA in scoring in 2025. Then he became the first Canadian ever to win NBA Finals MVP. Then he won league MVP again for the 2025-2026 regular season.

He also led Canada to the bronze medal at the FIBA World Cup with an overtime win over Team USA in Manila, Philippines, as well as a victory over Slovenia with Luka Doncic.

He finished second in MVP voting in 2024 behind Nikola Jokic of Denver Nuggets and Team Serbia. SGA’s team OKC won 62 games during the 2025 regular season — 18 more than Denver. SGA also led the NBA in plus-minus of more than 14 points per game. During the 2026 season, SGA averaged 31.1 points per game (on 55.3 field goal shooting, 38 percent from three and 87 percent from the free throw line), plus 6.6 assists as OKC won 64 games and lost only 18.

Steve Nash, from Victoria, British Columbia, won two MVP awards back to back in 2005 and 2006 with Phoenix Suns. But he didn’t win Finals MVP. There’s no doubt that SGA is the greatest Canadian basketball player ever.
