On his first trip to Puerto Escondido in the 1980s, journalist Christopher Johnson found a sleepy town with villagers giving him fresh oysters out of the Pacific Ocean. Decades later, it’s become a haven for surfers from Mexico, California and even Australians and Japanese from the other side of the ocean.
Never mind the news about cartel violence further north. Escondido, which means hidden, still has a peaceful vibe in the far south of Mexico. While you can see some world-class surfers in action, it’s also a great place for bodysurfers and also snorkelers, who can choose between calm bays or wild waves all within walking distance of the town.
Villagers still offer oysters right out of the ocean, though they no longer give them away for free.
