Flamenco still reigns in Cordoba, Spain

By Christopher Johnson

–In Cordoba, I saw one of the world’s greatest flamenco guitar players, Antonio Rey, in a small restaurant tucked away from a street in a residential area. I heard about it from a Scottish friend who was studying flamenco. We had a cold beer and watched Rey jam with some of his friends. It was like watching Paco de Lucia, Pat Metheny or other gods of the guitar playing at their favorite local restaurant.

On another night, I heard people singing and playing guitar in a house. They invited me inside to hear some of the best musicians in the country.

Cordoba is like that. You can stumble upon some of the world’s foremost flamenco musicians and dancers without trying. Cordoba in particular often hosts flamenco performances amid some of Europe’s oldest and most spectacular architecture. The tradition is very much alive and thriving in Andalusia in southern Spain.
