Team Canada names NBA stars for training camp ahead of FIBA World Cup

Canada, ranked 15th in the world, announced that several NBA stars are scheduled to attend training camp ahead of the FIBA World Cup in East Asia from August 25 to September 10.

NBA talent include Jamal Murray, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dillon Brooks, RJ Barrett,  Luguenz Dort, Dwight Powell, Kelly Olynyk and Cory Joseph. Former Carleton University Ravens champions Phil Scrubb and Thomas Scrubb are also listed on the “extended” team.

“The team will be composed of players committed to play from both the summer and winter cores in the current Olympic quad,” said Rowan Barrett, General Manager and Executive Vice-President of the Senior Men’s Program. “The familiarity, continuity and consistency this group brings will be critical as we pursue our goal of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

In Group H, Canada will face France (August 25 – 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time), Lebanon (August 27 – 5:45 a.m. ET) and Latvia (August 29 – 9:30 a.m. ET) in Jakarta, Indonesia. Sportsnet will broadcast and stream those matches.

Canada Basketball announced last month that Jordi Fernández will replace Nick Nurse, who has moved from the Toronto Raptors to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Team Canada will train August 1-6 in Toronto at the OVO Athletic Centre. They will play an exhibition game against Germany on August 9 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. If they beat New Zealand in Hamburg on August 12, Canada will play on August 13 against the winner of the Germany-China match.

Canada then travels to Granada, Spain for a two-game exhibition series August 17-18 against defending FIBA World Cup champions Spain and Dominican Republic at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes.

At the FIBA World Cup, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the second round, and then the top two teams from each second round group will advance to the medal rounds.

Team Canada can qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by finishing in the top two ahead of other teams from the Americas. Team USA is the favorite.
