| The outbreak of violence in Tibet last month shook Beijing and cast a shadow over preparations for this year’s Olympic Games. Christopher Johnson was in Lhasa when the trouble began and found that while young Tibetans happily accept some aspects of mainland culture, resentment of the Han Chinese is never far from the surface. The stairwell reeks of vomit and faeces but this doesn’t seem to bother the residents, who say they live on a spiritual level above material squalor. |
