Norchad Omier is first Nicaraguan in NBA

Norchad Omier became the first Nicaraguan to play in the NBA after the Los Angeles clippers signed him to a two-way contract and put him into a game against Indiana, where he scored two points and grabbed three rebounds.

Omier, who is 6-foot-7 and 248 pounds, played for Nicaragua at the FIBA AmeriCup 2026 in Managua, where he became known as the “Monster of Rebounds”, notching 30 points and 20 rebounds in one game.

Based on his 31 games with the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League, where he averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds, he played in the Next Up Game at the NBA all-star weekend before signing a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 20.

Born and raised in Bluefields on the Caribbean coast, he started playing basketball at age 13 and trained at La Academica de Basketball in Bluefields. He joined Miami Prep in Florida on a scholarship and notched 40 points with 17 rebounds against IMG Academy. Playing college ball at Arkansas State, where he averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds, he won 2021 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, the 2022 Sun Belt Player of the Year, and the 2022 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year.

He transferred to Miami and averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Hurricanes reached the 2023 NCAA Final Four. He then played for Baylor Bears, averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds, and made the 2025 All Big-12 First Team.

Undrafted in 2025, Omieri joined the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2025 NBA summer league and then played for Cleveland’s G League team before signing with LA Clippers.
