Chile, an Andean nation known for its distinct culture, advanced to the second round of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup by receiving fewer yellow and red cards than Egypt, who beat Chile 2-1 before a loud crowd at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago.
Chile, who beat New Zealand and lost to Japan in previous first round matches, controlled much of the play in the first half. They took the lead when Vicente Alvarez fired a shot into the bottom-left corner.

Egypt fought back but their free-kick bounced off the cross-bar.

With Chilean fans taking a break after half-time, Omar Khedr’s corner found the head of Ahmed Abdin to tie the match. The Young Pharaohs then took the lead when Khedr’s bending free kick fooled the Chilean wall and the goalkeeper.

But the Young Pharaohs dug their own tomb by chippy play that resulted in 7 yellow and red cards in the first round, two more than Chile. Thus Chile finished second in group A behind undefeated Japan.
